Turning A Picture Frame Into A Keepsake

Picture frames are under-appreciated. An inexpensive picture frame can become a keepsake that could last a lifetime. If you personalize it for yourself (or, better yet ,for someone else), not only will the picture be precious, but so will the frame.

My husband and I have decided this year Christmas will be homemade-handmade gifts for our friends and family. We've done it before and those are the gifts that are remembered and still mentioned from year-after-year.

So with that in mind, I decided to use some recently acquired ribbon, and craft pearls (Thanks for the goodies, Barb!) to embellish a picture frame and mini-vase for one of my nieces or cousins. I can just imagine a Justin Beiber picture or the smiling faces of best friends looking out of the frame at some point. The mini vase can hold hair doodads, jewelry or serve as a pencil holder on a desktop.

Inexpensive supplies used to make
a keepsake picture frame.
Supplies used - glitter tissue paper, Mod Podge, E-6000 craft adhesive, ribbon, gold glitter glue, craft pearls, picture frame and mini-vase. Some of the items pictured did not make the finished project.

I decided not to pre-paint the frame. I thought the black showing through would give it added character. Now I simply starting ripping up the tissue paper and gluing to the frame. Once I had it decoupaged, I covered it in gold glitter glue to add sparkle. I think the frame ended up with a leather look.

My next step was adding the craft pearls using
E-6000. Once the pearls were in place, I decided to add a wooden butterfly I had and I added moving eyes to it to further add personality.

Once I had the frame finished, I took some glitter polka dot tissue paper and decoupaged the inside of the mini-vase. Using E-6000, I added a white ribbon around the top and then further embellished it with pearls to tie the frame and doodad holder together, creating a matching set for any dresser or desktop.

I think anyone would love a gift that was created with them in mind.
