The Rock 'N Share.....NO RULES PARTY!
It was a great party this week with the biggest showing since the Rock 'N Share return! I was away for a few days visiting old friends and family and wasn't able to get to leave a comment for every link-up but I hope you all know that you are greatly appreciated! I also hope that you'll make this a regular stop when you party hop!

Meat and Potato Casserole - One Dish Dinner!

I love comfort food recipes that require little time and effort, but yield hearty flavor. This casserole is easy to put together, and is adaptable to family preferences, too! With staples like beef, potatoes, onions, and cheese, its every-thing-in-one-pot character is likely one of the reasons this dish has also been called the Hobo casserole.

Wreath & Centerpiece: A Celebration of Red, White & Blue

I thought I would share a couple of red, white and blue decorations for Independence Day! I like the patriotic holidays; my mother was born on the 4th of July, so it was always a double celebration around our house. The combination of red, white, and blue is pretty in its own right, and, with the Stars and Stripes a focal point from Memorial Day through Flag Day and Independence Day to Labor Day, is an icon of summer!

For this Independence Day, I've taken blue burlap and created an airy wreath that includes all of the holiday colors, but not in an expected arrangement. The iridescent ribbons float around the soft arc of the burlap loops, and a cluster of snow-white florets with ruby hearts anchors the lower half. The base wreath can be used for other projects, with the removal of the red and blue ribbons. I created the white flower cluster out of white paper doilies and clear glass beads that I colored red with a marker. A white tulle bow serves as the hanger.

Here are close-ups of the flower cluster and one of the iridescent bows.

For a centerpiece at our cookout, the inclusion of the patriotic colors had also to be practical. This skyrocket-in-a-can does double duty: as a weight to hold tablecloths in place, and  as a decoration that is not only playful, but playable...the pinwheels may be removed easily so the young (or young at heart!) may play with them. (I thought the Dollar Tree pinwheels would be fun for the kids, if they opted to play with them.) Otherwise, it is just a whimsical, colorful addition to the cookout tables.  I used some of the extra burlap to cover Dollar Tree buckets, and the red tinsel was something I had left over from topping Christmas gift baskets.

I spot glued the burlap to the buckets with the hot glue gun so it might be removed later. Then I  filled the buckets with glass stones and placed a Styrofoam plate over them. Next, I poked holes in the plates for the pinwheels. Anyone can easily remove the pinwheels and the red glittery fill hides the plate and adds more sparkle and we love sparkle!

Staycation Ideas for the Family!

What is a Staycation?
30 Staycation Ideas for the Family by The Shady Porch
Staycation is a term (since 2005) for a vacation that takes place at home or within the local area.

You can save $$$ (food, gas, lodging).
No check-out time! (Owning the 'inn' allows for sleeping in without adding to a bill.)
Spend quality time experiencing new things together that are in your own "backyard".

The planning is all yours. If you prefer to leave the organization to someone else, have another family member take the reins on the planning.
Eating at home requires some clean-up (splurge and go with paper!)
You could end up doing nothing (which might be a Pro for some!)

10 Garden Harvest Recipes...Fresh is Best!

Ten Garden Harvest Recipes from The Shady Porch #recipes #vegetables #salads #sidedish #dinner #recipe
Round-up of recipes using fresh from the garden veggies!
Every spring, I am filled with anticipation once the garden is in because we will be harvesting again, soon. We have a big garden planted with several varieties of tomatoes, bush and pole beans, squash, peppers, cauliflower, and broccoli. As soon as the crops start rolling in, I will share photos.
One of my favorite things is to take fresh produce and try new recipes! I think it would be hard to fail on any recipe using fresh-from-the-garden vegetables...the vibrant flavors of homegrown produce enhances everything.
With this in mind, I have gathered some past garden harvest recipes to share with you!

Gourd Art - Hot Air Balloon Wind Chime

I mentioned on an earlier post that we harvested gourds from our garden some years ago and they've been drying out waiting to be used. They're so dry now all there was to prep them for use was to shake out the seeds, which is a good thing - no messy scooping needed! Anyway, I've been inspired this year to finally make something of them all. My first creation, a Gourd Birdhouse: How-To, was the subject of that earlier post; now, I've made a Hot Air Balloon Wind Chime.

I turned this gourd all around looking for inspiration and, when I turned it stem side down, it reminded me of a Hot Air Balloon. I decided a hand- drawn, paisley-inspired design for the balloon portion would provide the right mood. I used one of my favorite media - pine cone petals - for the basket! The strings attaching the chimes are hidden by the balloon basket. This whimsical floating musical creation is gracing the front porch, now, and let's me know when a breeze is coming up to carry it away on a fantastic adventure.

Frozen Strawberry Cream Dessert

This is a frozen, fruity treat perfect for those hot days of summer! It's a light, fluffy cream loaded with strawberries and topped with a flavorful blueberry sauce. It takes some advance planning since it needs to freeze until it sets up before serving, but it's well worth it!
