    Resurrecting Easter Projects

As with other Christian holidays, it seems difficult to find much that celebrates the true meaning of the occasion. I love all of the spring colors and flowers which, along with chicks, rabbits and eggs, have much more to do with spring, and nothing to do with Easter. I set out to make some projects and to find projects that pay true homage to the genuine wonder of Easter...the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I re-created a tabletop Resurrection Garden I found on Pinterest for our home this Easter and am so pleased, I think I will make one every year! I also took some old pallet wood and made a sign using words from an old Bill Gaither hymn that I love, "because He lives...I can face tomorrow." I love using the aged pallet wood for this project because it makes me think of the age-old promise that we have because of the resurrection of Jesus!  Hallelujah!

    Happy Easter, Everyone!
"Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime."  ~Martin Luther
"The entire plan for the future has its key in the resurrection."  ~Billy Graham
Below are some of the projects I ran across that I felt spoke to the true meaning of Easter  too.

      Spring Is At The Door!

I've been counting the days until spring since December, and, now, it is finally at the door! Literally...at my door! I decided to welcome spring and everyone who stops by with an Easter basket of spring flowers and butterflies. I gathered everything for this little project at the Dollar Tree with the exception of the tulle (which I already had) and the branches (from my backyard).
Items purchased at the store: the flowers, butterflies, and basket. I bought a few other items as you can see from the supply picture below, but, in the end, did not use them. I made the WELCOME banner using PowerPoint software, a printer, and some nylon string. It was a project that ended up costing about $5-6 dollars. I'm really happy with the results, too!

      WELCOME SPRING!

Frequent visitors to  The Porch have probably noticed that I like to decorate my door for many occasions: big-game days, holidays, seasons, family celebrations, and so on.  Here are a few of my past door decor projects...
      Easter basket supplies
Here are the supplies I purchased to make the Welcome basket. I ended up not needing the paper grass (another project perhaps?). Now that the fun stuff is done it's on to spring cleaning, starting seedlings, changing wardrobe, changing to summer linens, prepping the porch, rearranging furniture ...did I say cleaning?  How are you planning to welcome Spring?

"It's spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!"     ~Mark Twain

Shamrock Crafts for St. Patrick's Day

This time last year, I had just learned my family has an Irish heritage. As a result, I had a new interest in the St. Patrick's Day celebrations, so I decorated the house by making a wreath for the door, and a few table-top decorations to mark the occasion.

This year, I made a new shamrock wreath for the door and a shamrock string art piece.  Both projects took very little time or money. The wreath is comprised of Dollar Tree items and the string art is scrap wood, and nails I commandeered from my hubby and nylon string I already had on hand.  Check 'em out!

I reused the wooden Welcome Friends banner from a wreath I made last spring...with a few modifications, of course. Then I wrapped a grapevine wreath in green velvet ribbon and  hot glued the Dollar Tree shamrocks to the ribbon. I used white tulle to make a hanger and that was all I needed to make this simple, yet friendly, door wreath!

I am just learning how to do String Art (this is only my second attempt), but I find it to be fun and would eventually like to get into more intricate designs. However, for St. Patrick's Day I thought a piece for a table top display would be nice.

To begin the project, you need a foundation. I used a 12x12 piece of 1/4 in. plywood that's been painted black. Next, I found an image to blow up and print for a template for the  outline I will trace with nails. Once the nails are in place, all that is left is attaching the string from nail to nail. The only word of advice is to be sure you use nails with heads so the string does not slip off.  I tie the string to begin and end and I put a little hot glue on it to keep it from fraying or coming untied. Ta-dah! String Art!

May your troubles be less, And your blessing be more.
And nothing but happiness, Come through your door.

          Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff

I've always felt like winter is the perfect season for using the slow cooker. I'm not sure why since I use mine year-round, but it just seems right to have the aroma of a home-cooked meal in the house throughout a cold winter's day. It gives the comforting feeling that we are ready for whatever Ol' Man Winter wants to throw at us.
Although we've been blessed with a mild-ish winter in our region, I've been using the slow cooker a lot! Today, I wanted to share the latest recipe - Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff.

This makes a rich, creamy sauce that is delicious served over egg noodles or rice.
