The Shady Porch: Delicious Recipe for Homemade Beef Chow Mein

Delicious Recipe for Homemade Beef Chow Mein

With Chinese New Year arriving on January 30, I thought I would share one of our favorite Chinese recipes, Beef Chow Mein. We love stir-fry and our wok has become well-used over the years. I haven't learned to make my own Chinese noodles (yet), but I still think this recipe rivals anything I could buy at the local restaurant. I've learned that there are basically 6 types of Chinese noodle recipes - pot, soup, steamed, stir-fried, and gravy noodles. Our Beef Chow Mein uses a stir-fried noodle.

Beef Chow Mein
This recipe makes a hearty portion - not unlike what you get from your favorite Chinese restaurant - so you can cut the recipe in half, or, like us, you can enjoy it for lunch the next day.

1 lb. sirloin, thinly sliced (The meat department at our grocer is really helpful with this and has cut meat for us to use in stir fry. Check with your butcher.)
1 t. sesame oil
1 T. minced garlic
1 T. soy sauce
1 t. sugar or sugar substitute
2 T. peanut oil
2 T. flour
2 c. beef broth
2 bg of frozen stir-fry vegetables
3 green onions, diced
2 pkgs of chow mein noodles, boiled or 3-4 cups hot, cooked rice
Note - The chow mein noodles I use are long skinny noodles that require cooking. The hard crunchy kind are what we use for garnish.  Option - you can use brown or white rice as a substitute.

  1. Combine beef, minced garlic, sugar, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Set aside to marinate for 20-60 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl - add the cornstarch, then slowly trickle in the beef broth, mixing steadily to prevent lumps.
  3. Drain the beef, but save the marinade for later.
  4. Boil the noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  5. Heat peanut oil in a wok or large skillet until it sizzles, then add the beef and fry until done.
  6. Next combine the beef broth mixture and the marinade. Pour into the hot wok/skillet and cook until it boils. Stir constantly.
  7. Now add the frozen stir-fry vegetables and cook until heated through.
  8. Once the vegetables are cooked, add the noodles and stir it all together.
Serve the Beef Chow Mein from a large platter. Garnish with diced green onions and crunchy chow mein noodles. Serves 6 - 8.
