The Shady Porch: Our Homemade Pizzeria-Style Pizza...Saves money!

Our Homemade Pizzeria-Style Pizza...Saves money!

We've had a regular pizza night (usually Fridays) at our house for ages. It is a time-saver to pick-up dinner on the way home, especially to kick off the weekend. The hubby was such a regular at one local place that they sent us a Christmas card! That made us think about just HOW often we were buying pizza from this shop; that led us to look at how much pizza was costing us. Once we became aware, we saw prices just continue to climb, but we weren't getting anything for the extra costs. Of course, if you've followed us here at the Porch, you know that we like to take our favorite food finds and create our own home-version of it so we can prepare it anytime... and that's exactly what we've done with pizza night!

We love Pizza Night!

We can make two pizzeria-style pizzas at home for the price of one from a local pizza place. We like the works (no anchovies) on our pizzas and, in our area, that comes to an average bill of $30.00 + for two pies. Our homemade works pizzas cost about $12 - $14, so we save about $16 - $18 by making our own. If we actually made pizza every week of the year, we would save over $800 compared to buying it from a shop. (52 weeks x $16 average savings = $832 annual savings). Can you believe it? We usually have pizza leftover and it gets packed up and consumed as lunches so nothing goes to waste.

Pre-made Crusts
Pre-made Crusts
Crust is key for a good pizza and we change ours up from time-to-time. Sometimes we make our own dough; we have used a canned dough, and other times we purchase pre-made crusts. No matter how we slice it, we are still saving money and loving our Pizza night.

Homemade Pizza Ingredients
 Pizza Ingredients

pizza crust(s) (pre-made or crust mix, canned dough or homemade, we like all of these!)
pkg of pre-sliced pepperoni
pkg of crumbled turkey sausage
diced onion
pizza sauce -  homemade or jar
shredded mozzarella cheese or shredded Italian blend cheese
Parmesan cheese
Italian seasonings
Garlic salt
Basil pesto
[Note - if you don't have pesto, brush a layer of olive oil over the surface of the crust before seasoning.]

Look for our homemade pizza sauce and dough recipes on future posts.

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Place pre-made pizza crust on pizza stone or pizza pans.

  4. Brush a thin layer of basil pesto over the entire crust...edge-to-edge.
  5. Sprinkle a  light layer of Italian seasoning, garlic salt and Parmesan cheese over the crusts.
Spread a layer of pizza sauce
  6. Spread a layer of pizza sauce (We like very light sauce on our pizza. It's hard to get the pizza places to honor our request for light sauce for some reason!)
Add pepperoni from edge-to-edge. Sprinkle a layer of the crumbled sausage.
  7. Add pepperoni from edge-to-edge.
  8. Sprinkle a layer of the crumbled sausage.
  9. Add  mozzarella cheese.
Add mozzarella cheese and veggie toppings.
  10. Now add any of the veggie toppings you like. We always add onion and at other times we also add green peppers, banana peppers, olives, and mushrooms too.
Bake the pizza 8-15 minutes depending on the crust you have chosen.
  11. Bake between 8-15 minutes. It really depends on the style crust you are using. For example, if it's a thin crust it takes less time than a regular or dough crust.
