Game Day Recipes for Your Super Bowl Party

It happens every year….Our house is more of a college football house, so I pay very little attention to NFL football during the regular season. Even though the hubby watches the occasional game – he is a Browns sufferer – I never sit through a half, much less a whole game. And then, as the playoffs move along, I kinda catch the Super Bowl fever. To be honest, I think it started with the commercials. I really like the mini-events that Super Bowl commercials have become and, from my desire to watch them, I am a Super Bowl watcher. Of course, as Super Sunday approaches, if I know I am going to watch, I have to get invested, so I cheer for one of the squads as though I have been a life-long fan. One of the things that college and pro football fans share is the love of the tailgate. We are avid college football fans; tailgating means party time, so we must have party food.

So, in time for Super Bowl Sunday, here are some of our Game Day favorites.

Party On The Porch: Valentine's Day recipes, crafts & DIY ideas!

Hey all!
It's been frigid around the Shady Porch lately. Of course, I think most of us can probably say that this winter! Between snow, wind-chill, and, most recently, a water main break, hubby has only taught 8 days in 2014. It's been nice having him home. We've cooked together, played Aggravation (my favorite old board game I found on Ebay!) and laughed, a lot. What have you been up to during this Arctic experience?

It's time again to Shine, Share & Inspire! I get inspiration from your projects/recipes and I'm encouraged and entertained by your openness about living life. I appreciate you. Thank you for being here.
Welcome to all of the new bloggers that are here today. Glad you could make it!
Have a great time and a wonderful week.

Pork Sliders with Honey-Mustard Aioli

Slow cooker pork tenderloin is tender and juicy, but has a limited flavor (in my opinion) unless marinated, rubbed, or paired with a sauce. Today I am sharing my homemade honey-mustard aioli, which is great with burgers, salmon, grilled potatoes and/or grilled chicken sandwiches, as well as today's featured dish - the pork tenderloin slider.

Honestly, there are days when the slow cooker is my best friend... days when spending the time in the kitchen preparing meals just doesn't fit my schedule, or (maybe) my mood. On those occasions, I say a prayer of thanksgiving for my slow cooker. This recipe for slow cooker pork sliders and honey-mustard aioli (mayonnaise sauce) comes together quite quickly and is really delicious. Though, in this case, it was for a regular meal, it would be ideal for larger gatherings, too.

Overnight Slow Cooker Steel Cut Oatmeal

I believe the old adage that says breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I try to prepare something that is both healthy and delicious to help get everyone off to a good start. Oatmeal has always been on our breakfast menu, but since we are trying to eat healthier this year, we decided to try steel cut oats instead of the more familiar rolled oats. Steel cut oats are less processed and take a considerable amount of cook time (45 minutes) compared to our usual minute oats. Obviously, that is not a plus, but when I learned I can prepare them overnight in my slow cooker...Win!

According to Prevention magazine, the steel cut oats are healthier than rolled oats because they are lower on the glycemic index, meaning they do not cause your blood-sugar to spike. This is important if anyone has diabetes or prediabetes in your family.
They were delicious, and, if hubby's opinion can be quoted, they were more (this is his word) 'oatey.' He went on to explain that the steel cuts seemed more substantial and more filling.

They are giving you a way to export a file of all of your saved recipes and shopping list items before December 10th. Please visit this landing page - http://www.ziplist.com/savemyziplist - to request a download.

Hi Everyone!

One of the great things about sharing so many wonderful recipes - both here on the Porch and through the weekly party - is expanding the kind and number of delicious options I have for my family. Biggest complication - trying to save the recipe (or copy the recipe!) so I can get to it quickly and easily, and then converting the recipe into a reasonable shopping list.
Houston, I think we have a solution to this problem, as well as some other great features! Allow me to introduce you to a new partner at The Shady Porch...

Crumb Top Banana-Orange Bread

This delicious Crumb Top Banana-Orange Bread is a great way to start the day, grab a snack, or finish a meal. I like this recipe because of the wholesome ingredients it calls for - oats, nuts, honey, orange juice, and bananas.  Honestly, this bread is delicious and beats those quick, easy, unhealthy choices like donuts and toaster strudels.  We used our loaf pan this time, but this recipe is ideal for muffins too.

Party On The Porch: Plan, Organize and DeClutter!

Thanks to everyone for making the first Party On The Porch a great success. The creativity and inspiration you provide through your participation is a great gift to this girl; I am thankful for your faithfulness and your friendship. Sometimes, in the midst of balancing life - family, friends, blog, work - it can feel isolating. Your sharing here is the kind of things our mothers did over kitchen tables and backyard fences...swapping cups of sugar along with household tips and hints. And, even more than that, they were building a community; a neighborhood...and so are we.

It appears everyone is trying to Plan, Organize, and DeClutter in 2014, based on the number and the popularity of the posts from last week's party and - in case you missed it - I'm featuring some of those ideas today. Hope you find something you can use...hubby did!

Delicious Recipe for Homemade Beef Chow Mein

With Chinese New Year arriving on January 30, I thought I would share one of our favorite Chinese recipes, Beef Chow Mein. We love stir-fry and our wok has become well-used over the years. I haven't learned to make my own Chinese noodles (yet), but I still think this recipe rivals anything I could buy at the local restaurant. I've learned that there are basically 6 types of Chinese noodle recipes - pot, soup, steamed, stir-fried, and gravy noodles. Our Beef Chow Mein uses a stir-fried noodle.

7 Ideas For Styling Your Bell Jar aka Cloche

Did you get a glass dome (also known as a cloche jar or bell jar)for Christmas? Wondering what to do with it? Well, I did and I have been.  Apparently, they were originally used to protect plants from frostbite, but have migrated into living spaces for decorative purposes. I love mine, but I have never seen one in any of my family or friends' homes, so, after a fortunate beginning over Christmas, I am at a loss for what to do with it until now. I've done some research and here are some Ideas For Styling Your Bell Jar (also known as a Cloche).

Baked Chicken Fajitas

The first time we had Fajitas was on a vacation in Texas. There was a drive-thru Fajita restaurant and, since we had no idea what they were and it was vacation...we decided to try it. (Adventurous, I know.) They sold the seasoned, sliced beef by the pound, and we wondered what we were getting into when we were handed three large containers through the window, but it was a delicious discovery. One container had a slices of seasoned meat, another held peppers and onions and the other container had tortillas. A simple meal, but one that made an impression on us.

Slow Cooker Cheesy Beef Nachos

It's a party food or a casual supper! Nachos have all of the elements of a classic dish. The crunchy chips provide texture; color comes from the array of veggies - chiles, tomatoes, onions; cheese brings a contrast in texture and color as well as taste. From the seasonings and great toppings, the full flavor, often spicy, of the classic nacho dish can be more than many expect from what used to be thought of as a bag of chips and some canned cheese. We don't fix nachos on a regular basis, so it is always a treat when they make the menu. This recipe can be adapted to feeding a crowd, or just an intimate few, which makes it a great addition to any list of potential dishes when party planning.
